Dr. Sy Burns Reflects on Faith, Healing, and Her Testimony in Gratitude Provides Abundance

For nearly 20 years, Dr. Sy Burns carried a book in her heart before finding the courage to put pen to paper. The co-author of Gratitude Provides Abundance, speaker, executive leadership coach, and former educator spent three decades serving in public education, becoming the first African American female principal of two campuses in her school district and serving in executive leadership.

Yet, as Dr. Sy Burns shares, “Those accomplishments are meaningful to me, but they are not the whole story.” The woman behind those accomplishments was also carrying other chapters. “The woman I am today was shaped just as much by the moments no one saw.” She continues, “I was shaped by seasons of disappointment, uncertainty, loss, embarrassment, and having to find the courage to keep moving forward when life looked nothing like I had planned.” Dr. Burns says she experienced a teenage pregnancy as a result of sexual assault, and for many years, shame tried to convince her that her story was something she needed to hide. “But God has a way of taking the very places where we experienced pain and transforming them into places of purpose,” she says.

Over time, Dr. Burns learned that her experiences did not disqualify her but instead developed her. Every season taught her something about resilience, perseverance, authentic leadership, compassion, and the faithfulness of God. “Today, I am a woman who does not look like what she has been through.” In fact, Dr. Burns says she is stronger because she refused to allow what almost broke her to bury her.

“I believe deeply in the power of prayer and the purpose God places within each of us. I have learned that success is not simply about what you accomplish. It is also about who you become while God is preparing you for what comes next. My life is a testimony that the chapters we would sometimes prefer to hide can become the very chapters God uses to encourage, inspire, and empower someone else.”

Throughout Dr. Burns’ journey, as her faith grew, one thing became clear: God is faithful. “My relationship with God has evolved. It has become less about simply knowing about God and more about truly knowing Him for myself.” She continues, “I have experienced seasons of hurt, disappointment, and uncertainty. I have had questions and walked through moments when I did not understand what God was doing. But I have learned that God can handle our questions, our tears, and our pain. Through every season, He has continued to show me that He is faithful.”

She shares that Proverbs 3:5–6, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths,” has become more than a Bible verse to her. “It has become something I replay in my mind when I need encouragement: Trust God, even when you cannot trace Him. My relationship with God has influenced how I lead, serve, coach, speak, write, and understand my own story.”

It was this trust in God that eventually lead Dr. Burns to say yes to sharing her story as a co-author in Gratitude Provides Abundance, published by Sparkle Publishing. Gratitude Provides Abundance is a faith-centered anthology that brings together personal testimonies of choosing gratitude, even through life’s most difficult seasons.

“When I saw the opportunity to become a contributing author in an anthology centered on Gratitude Provides Abundance, I knew this was more than simply contributing words to a book. It was an opportunity to contribute testimony.” Dr. Burns believes the experiences God allows us to walk through are not always just for us. “Sometimes what we survive becomes the encouragement someone else needs to keep going. As a first-time author, the anthology format felt like God’s perfect plan for me. It gave me the opportunity to share my testimony without feeling as though I had to relive every painful memory all at once.”

Dr. Burns’ contribution, The Legacy of Faith, is deeply personal. It reflects the gratitude that has carried her through the hills and valleys of her life and taught her not to remain bitter over what she has endured, but to recognize how God carried her through it. “Gratitude Provides Abundance reminded me that gratitude does not mean we deny our pain. It means we recognize that even in difficult seasons, God is still present and has already provided more than we sometimes realize.”

Yet getting to the place where she was ready to share her story took time. “There is a difference between having a story and being ready to share it,” Dr. Burns continues. “I had learned how to be successful, lead, show up for others, and smile on the outside while crying silently on the inside. But God began teaching me that healing is not always about forgetting what happened. Sometimes healing is realizing that what happened no longer has the power to define you.”

“He taught me to forgive, to heal, and to live with gratitude,” she says. “I said yes for the woman carrying shame that was never hers to carry. I said yes for the woman who believes one difficult chapter has disqualified her from a beautiful future. I said yes for the teen mother, the survivor of sexual assault, and children born from assault. I said yes because I have learned that when God redeems a story, we do not have to be ashamed of the testimony.”

Dr. Burns points to 2 Corinthians 1:4, which reminds believers that God comforts us so that we can comfort others with the comfort we have received. “I did not say yes because I have lived a perfect life. I said yes because I have experienced the faithfulness of a perfect God, and He has taught me what it means to have gratitude in my heart.”

Writing her story also became a reminder of just how far God had brought her. “Writing my story allowed me to see that I had moved from pain to healing, from surviving to living.”

As readers turn the pages of Gratitude Provides Abundance, Dr. Burns hopes they leave with more than simply an inspiring story. “I hope readers feel seen, encouraged, and reminded that their past does not disqualify them from a purposeful future. Spiritually, I hope they are reminded that God is faithful, even in the painful chapters, and that He can redeem their story and use it to bless someone else. I hope they walk away believing Ephesians 3:20, that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we can ask or think. Most of all, I hope they realize that their story is not over.”

For Dr. Burns, Gratitude Provides Abundance is more than her first published work. It is the fulfillment of something she carried in her heart for nearly two decades. It is also a reminder that God is able to take the chapters we would sometimes rather hide and use them to encourage, inspire, and empower someone else.
