Woman to Watch in 2026: Nykisha M. Banks

There comes a season in every woman’s life when comfort begins to feel heavier than risk and when playing it safe costs more than stepping out in faith. For Nykisha M. Banks, that season unfolded quietly but unmistakably, as God made it clear she could no longer play it safe or remain where she was simply comfortable.

By day, Nykisha was working in Corporate America as a Commercial Lines Underwriter at a major Fortune 500 company, commuting nearly two hours each way, three on rainy days. By night, she drove another two hours to teach dance, coaching performance teams, competitive teams, and preparing dancers for a World Dance Championship. She was faithful in both spaces, pouring herself out completely, yet only one place truly filled her. As she shares, “I was pouring so much into both worlds, but only one of them actually filled me.”

When she was chosen as an onsite support trainer for incoming underwriters and the underwriting services department, she gave everything she had. Yet several of the very people she trained were promoted over her and still came to her for training. That moment shook her, but it also awakened something deeper. The long commutes, the traffic, and the push to excel in a space where fulfillment never came suddenly felt heavier than ever. In contrast, every time she stepped into a dance studio, she saw fruit. “Every time I stepped into a dance studio, I saw the fruit of my labor, growth, confidence, and transformation. I saw impact. I saw purpose.”

That clarity required courage. Nykisha walked away from the security and salary of Corporate America and stepped fully into teaching dance full time in studios and within the school system. It was a sacrifice, a huge and frightening pay cut, and the future was uncertain. But her trust was steady. She knew Who held it. That was the moment she rose beyond fear and comfort and stepped fully into the assignment God had placed on her life.

Obedience, however, did not mean ease.

As the Founder of In the Key of Dance, one of the greatest obstacles Nykisha faced was realizing that the real wilderness was not inside the dance room. It was in navigating the emotional, mental, and spiritual landscapes of the families she served. She entered this calling believing she was here to train dancers and make a difference in their lives. What she did not expect was to stand face to face with unspoken struggles, depression, stress, anxiety, insecurity, comparison, and emotional wounds, not only among dancers, but among parents as well.

She quickly learned that while many loved the structure, discipline, and nurturing environment of the studio, some still pushed against the boundaries designed to protect their children and preserve the integrity of their training. The lesson came through exhaustion and discernment. Their internal storms were not hers to carry, and their personal battles at home were not studio emergencies. She was not called to be a mental health therapist, nor could she allow others’ chaos to shape the atmosphere God entrusted her to steward.

It was in that wilderness, pulled in every direction and surrounded by expectations, raw emotions, and personalities that stretched her thin, that God met her and steadied her. He taught her how to lead with both compassion and backbone, how to hold firm boundaries without guilt, and how to remain anchored when other people’s storms tried to sweep her away. In moments when she felt blindsided, overwhelmed, questioned her why, or tempted to quit, God refined her. Instead of allowing resentment or exhaustion to win, He gave her wisdom, resilience, and discernment that only come from walking closely with Him. Through every challenging parent, every emotional child, and every stretching season, God was not just sustaining her. He was shaping her into the woman, leader, and gatekeeper this assignment required.

Today, Nykisha serves, leads, and creates by building a space where dancers grow in skill, confidence, and character while feeling seen, supported, and safe. “Every choice I make, how I structure classes, design curriculum, and set expectations, is rooted in integrity, care, and intentionality.” She leads with the conviction that excellence is not just about technique, but about resilience, self confidence, and a heart aligned with God’s purpose.

Beyond the studio floor, she empowers dancers to take ownership of their journey both on and off the stage. She encourages courage, respect, grace, accountability, and hard work. Every correction becomes a lesson. Every moment of encouragement becomes a reflection of God’s love. Her vision is clear, to shape not only skilled dancers, but confident, God centered dancers.

The Scripture anchoring her leadership in this season is Joshua 1:9:
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

This promise reminds her that the work God has called her to is not dependent on approval, immediate results, or the absence of challenge. Even when her best efforts feel insufficient, His presence remains constant. That truth guides how she teaches, mentors, leads, and protects the environment of her dancers, trusting that God is working through every seed planted.

And if Nykisha could speak directly to the woman standing on the edge of her next God led assignment, her words are both tender and resolute:

“Step forward without hesitation. God has already equipped you for this assignment that’s tugging at you. Your obedience matters more than perfection, and your faithfulness will leave a mark far beyond what you can see. Walk boldly, trust Him completely, claim the purpose He has placed before you, and don’t forget to try your best to enjoy the journey.”

The road may not be easy, but she reminds us to step forward anyway, chest forward, shoulders back, holding fast to the promise, “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.” (Philippians 1:6)

This is why Nykisha M. Banks is a 2026 Woman to Watch, because she chose obedience over comfort, purpose over fear, and trusted God to complete what He began.
