Patrice Thomas Is Learning to Trust God Through Change

Patrice Thomas wears many hats, but none of them define her more than her heart to serve. She is a certified Speech-Language Pathologist and the owner of Unique Speech Techniques, where she is known for offering relationship-centered speech therapy that meets people where they are. Beyond her professional work, she shows up in her community as a mentor, speaker, and woman committed to helping others find clarity when life feels uncertain.

That commitment didn’t come from theory. It came from lived experience.

“In this season of my life, I sense God shaping me to be more patient, trusting, and grounded in my identity,” Patrice shares. “Through challenges and unpredictable circumstances, I’ve learned to release control and allow Him to guide me through uncertainty.”

This season has changed how she sees God and herself. “This season has deepened my understanding of God’s character. I’ve experienced Him as a comforter, healer, protector, and provider, much like the loving father He is.” She says that growth has allowed her to move forward without looking for approval from others. “I’m confident that God will always be with me no matter what it looks like.”

A Calling That Grew From Loss

Much of the work Patrice does today flows directly from grief she never expected to carry.

“The assignment God has placed on my heart right now is to steward and help restore hearts that have been impacted by grief especially where there has been mismanagement, pain, trauma, and unmet expectations,” she explains.

That assignment became clear after losing her mother in June 2020. “This calling was birthed out of my own loss. After my mom passed away, a passion and clarity emerged that I couldn’t explain.” What followed surprised her. “Even when I lacked the resources to do what I felt led to do, everything I needed was provided, and the work unfolded with ease and confirmation.”

That journey eventually led her to create Grieve On Purpose, a growing platform designed to help people face pain honestly and find meaning on the other side of it. “That combination of peace, provision, and purpose made it clear to me that this assignment was God-led,” she says.

Obedience Before Comfort

One defining moment came while planning the Brunch with Purpose: Embracing The Other Side of Pain event, when Patrice had to move forward without having everything figured out.

“Obedience required me to move before I felt ready,” she says.

She admits she was used to doing things alone. “I had rarely asked anyone for help in the past financially or otherwise, but God quickly disrupted that mindset.” Instead of waiting, she began building relationships, reaching out for support, and staying in prayer for guidance.

What she learned stayed with her. “This experience taught me that obedience doesn’t require readiness and five ducks in a straight row, it requires trust. It requires a willing heart, one step, and faith.” In time, provision came. “As soon as I got everything I needed, of course, my check hit the bank.”

When Everything Fell Apart at Once

There was also a season when it felt like everything Patrice had built was stripped away.

“I was shaken by how everything went silent, my car was stolen, I had to close my private practice, and all of my accounts were emptied in less than three months,” she says. “It was just God and me.”

At first, it felt like loss on top of loss. Looking back, she sees something different. “It felt as though He cut everything and everyone off from me, family, friends, and familiar comforts. I didn’t understand it at first, but now I’m thankful.”

She believes God was working in ways she couldn’t see then. “He was protecting me while also revealing, uprooting, and healing me.” Without outside voices or distractions, something settled in her. “Without outside noise, influence, or validation, my trust in Him deepened, and my faith was strengthened like never before. I know who I am.”

What Changed on the Inside

Before new opportunities came, Patrice says her thinking had to change.

“Before I saw growth externally, God had to shift my perspective,” she explains. She realized she often took situations at face value instead of trusting God’s bigger plan. “I had a tendency to see things only for what they were, instead of viewing unexpected circumstances as part of the ‘all things’ working together for my good.”

That shift helped her do deeper work. “Through it all, I learned to let go more easily, to forgive, sit with my feelings, and take responsibility for the consequences of my actions and disobedience.”

Helping Others While Still Healing

Alongside her work with Grieve On Purpose, Patrice also shares her personal healing journey through her blog, Grow With Patrice, where she writes openly about grief, growth, and faith. She also mentors students through Public School Outreach, helping young people build confidence, resilience, and vision for their futures.

Staying grounded matters to her. “I stay anchored in God while navigating responsibility, leadership, or visibility by maintaining a structured routine and surrounding myself with accountability and community.”

She’s also learned to be careful with her heart. “This season isn’t about closing my heart; it’s about stewarding it well and honoring what God is cultivating within me.”

She describes herself as still learning. “At this stage, I feel like Diana in Wonder Woman in training, learning how to protect and properly use her power once she became aware of the authority she carried.”

Turning Grief Into Purpose

Losing her mother didn’t just mark an ending, it became the starting point for her book and deeper work.

“Losing my mother to a rare and aggressive cancer that took her swiftly was incredibly difficult, but it became the foundation for my upcoming book and organization, Grieve On Purpose.”

Through that experience, her understanding of grief expanded. “I realized grief has layers far beyond death itself. It’s woven into adversity, growing pains, and the quiet moments when life doesn’t go as planned.”

Her upcoming book, Unpredictable Shifts: Viewing Life From God’s Perspective During Uncertain Times, reflects that journey. “What started as a season of mourning became a platform for purpose, compassion, and deeper faith,” she says.

A Word for the Woman Who Feels Overlooked

Patrice speaks directly to women who feel unseen.

“Feeling unseen does not mean she is unknown, God sees her fully, even in the quiet places where others have overlooked her.” She believes honesty is key. “God can’t heal who you pretend to be, He heals the woman who shows up honestly before Him.”

What Carries Her Forward

The scripture that continues to steady her is Jeremiah 29:11:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Even when life feels uncertain, Patrice believes the process has meaning. “It’s the reinvention of us through the process that carries us into the hope and future God promised.”
