TODAY’S PURPOSE WOMAN is proud to celebrate and promote authors who are impacting the lives of others both on and off the paper. In our series, Powerhouse Authors, we highlight and chat with remarkable authors about their books and why they feel it is needed in today’s world.
We recently spoke with Royanne Mitchell originally from Trinidad and Tobago. She is an accomplished gospel singer, an ordained Music Minister, an administrator, a realtor and an entrepreneur at heart. Royanne has performed on several occasions nationally and internationally. Her main objective is to reach the lost through her gifts, talents, and expertise.
Mitchell is the author of Breaking Through – A Christian’s Perspective on a Journey to Freedom from Anxiety and Fear, a fresh new perspective for those looking for ways to cope or become free from their anxiety. The book provides practical insights regarding mental health and recognizes that people disregard the mental struggles individuals face with each passing day.
Mitchell writes from experience as she also struggled through several months of enduring debilitating symptoms of fear and anxiety but was able to break through. Through her book, she wants to help others do the same.
Below is our conversation with Royanne about her book and why she feels it is essential in today’s world. Read the full interview below.
Your upbringing played an important role in how you were able to break free from your struggles with fear and anxiety. Tell us a little about your faith as a little girl.
As a little girl, I’ve always been grafted and grounded in the Word of God. My mother played a major part in this. Aside from Sunday School, I learned the characteristics of a Christian and how to walk the walk and talk the talk from my mother and her friends. I observed their attitude towards the things of God, their love for Him, His people and ministry, and their faith that moved mountains. I remember being the only child among these “on fire for God” adults at their home prayer meetings and bible study meetings. I guess that’s why they would always say that I was way beyond my age.
It was at these spirit-filled home gatherings that I received the gift of speaking in tongues. It was also at these gatherings that I learned how to pray and intercede. I’ve witnessed rain stop at the command of our voices, I’ve seen demons speak and I’ve seen them being cast out, I’ve seen the sick healed and the downcast set free immediately and I’ve seen God make ways when there seemed to be absolutely no way. I can go on and on but being a child of God all my life has benefited me not just mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically, but in so many ways. That’s why, from the onset of my traumatic experience, I pulled from what I’ve learned throughout the years in my Christian walk from a child up until now. I’ve also had to glean from the Faith teachings that have been instilled in me by my spiritual leader, Apostle Sherron Parrish, at Fountain of Life Faith Center, Intl. Therefore, I know that most of the time after being taught something, a test is sure to follow. But I also know the God in whom I believe, and I’ve seen Him move in ways that only He can, therefore with His grace and power, I can pass every test.
How did God reveal to you that He wanted you to write Breaking Through – A Christian’s Perspective on a Journey to Freedom from Anxiety and Fear?
I remember God waking me up at 4 o’clock one morning when I began to make a note of everything that I went through and everything that I did to make it through. As God spoke, I wrote. A very important factor in my writing was the fact that each chapter was derived from each letter in the word “BREAKING”, hence, the reason there are eight chapters in the book. As God continued to speak to me, He revealed what each chapter should be titled as it related to my breaking-through journey. He took me back from where everything first started and from then I began to write my story after which the revelation began to flow. The debilitating symptoms of fear and anxiety that I endured for several months had me in a position where I felt hopeless and as though the struggle with fear, anxiety and panic attacks came to stay and would last for the rest of my life. Those same feelings have positioned me to identify with other individuals who have similar experiences and now I can share what I did to break through the most tormenting periods of them all. This experience has truly inspired me to encourage and help others navigate through their fears and anxieties to the point where they no longer exist. And I believe that God has allowed me to share my experience in the form of a book as a starting point.
Why do you feel this book is essential, especially now?
Mental health has become an ongoing topic today. Since many traumas and unsettled emotional issues have always been shoved under the rug and never dealt with head-on for years, society is now seeing its negative effects at home, in the workplace, in relationships and in social environments. When they hear about other individuals who are dealing with the same issues, it gives them the reassurance that they are not alone, they’re not crazy, and they are not in the middle of a hopeless situation. This reassurance also amplifies their voice to express how they feel, which is a healthy way instead of bottling up their emotions and exploding them in unhealthy ways.
Who will benefit from reading Breaking Through – A Christian’s Perspective on a Journey to Freedom from Anxiety and Fear?
This book is written for those battling anxiety, fear, depression, and other issues. It’s also written for individuals who may have family or friends that deal with these mental issues so that they can be educated and know how to support them in ways that bring progression and not regression. After reading this book, I would like the reader to better understand how chronic fear and anxiety operate, how these mental issues can be dealt with, and ways to stay grounded from a spiritual aspect. I hope that this book will enrich their spirits, strengthen them, give them hope, and encourage and help them profoundly and monumentally.
