Kept by God: Sophia McBride on Survival, Surrender, and a Life Formed in Christ
There are stories that begin in strength, and others that begin in survival. For Sophia McBride, her story began in places most would never expect purpose to emerge—from trauma, pain, and moments that could have shattered her mind. Yet even before platforms or public assignments, God was already revealing Himself as her keeper. “Sexually assaulted by my distant cousin at seven and disgraced by my schizophrenic father, who unalived his mother while in psychosis when I was eight and a half years old, God revealed to me His ability to sustain my mind and protect me from overwhelming, relentless mental and physical attacks,” she said.
Even as a child, she recognized that her survival was not her own, but sustained by something greater. “I was very much aware that it had to be something or someone supernatural keeping me,” she shared. That awareness awakened a hunger that would shape her life. “At the age of nine, I knew I wanted to know more about the powerful God who could keep me in the midst of all I was experiencing.”
Though she was introduced to faith early, intimacy with God came later. For years, her life reflected structure without transformation. “Though I was saved early in life, my spiritual growth did not begin until I was filled with the Holy Spirit at the age of 24,” she said. “I attended church my whole life and served in music ministry. I knew how to do church, but I did not know the Lord. I heard a lot of preaching, but there was no power. I was empty and ignorant of God’s Word.”
That emptiness led her to a defining question that shifted everything. “I remember thinking, ‘If this is all there is to You, God, then I can’t do this for the rest of my life.’” What she began to see around her confirmed that something was missing. “No souls were being saved. No one was being transformed. The same people are doing the same thing at the same time every week. For what? I said, ‘Lord, is this all there is to You?’” That question became the turning point. “It was that question I posed to the Lord that transformed my life. Very soon thereafter, I was exposed to a healing ministry.”
From that moment, her pursuit of God became deeply personal. She did not wait for clarity—she responded with surrender. “I remember asking the Lord, ‘If that is really You, then that is what I want.’” What followed was consistency over perfection. “From that point, I began studying the Bible on my own every day. I started praying. I didn’t know if I was praying right. I just started talking to God consistently.” With no one to guide her, she learned complete dependence on the Spirit. “The Holy Spirit was my teacher because I didn’t have anyone to walk me through the process,” she said.
Her hunger for God intensified into pursuit. She desired to encounter Him beyond theory. “I was desperate to know the God who could cause blinded eyes and deaf ears to be opened. I wanted to see firsthand people come in wheelchairs and leave walking.” And in that desperation, transformation came. “I began to pursue God with everything that was in me. It was in this season that the Lord transformed me. He met me while I was on my face, praying and crying out to know Him.”
Over time, God continued shaping her through many seasons, but one in particular refined her deeply. “There have been many seasons throughout my life that God has used to shape and refine me into the woman I am today,” Sophia McBride said. Marriage became a defining place of transformation. “If I had to identify the season that most profoundly shaped my faith and deepened my trust in God, it would be the nearly thirty years of my marriage.”
Marriage exposed what still needed surrender and revealed the depth of her dependence on God. “Marriage has a unique way of exposing the parts of you that still need transformation,” she said. “Over the years, I have learned that marriage requires a continual dying to self.” In seasons where strength was not enough, she learned where true strength comes from. “In those moments, human strength is not enough. You must lean on God to sustain you and allow the Holy Spirit to bring your flesh into submission.”
One of her greatest lessons has been restraint—choosing discipline over reaction. “One of the greatest disciplines I have had to learn is the art of restraint, learning when to remain silent when every emotion within you wants to react,” she said. Through it all, her capacity to endure, forgive, and respond has been shaped by intimacy with Christ. “What I have discovered is that the deeper my intimacy with Christ becomes, the greater my capacity is to endure, to forgive, and to respond in a way that reflects His character rather than my flesh.”
Her identity remains firmly anchored beyond titles or assignments. “The titles I carry are expressions of what God has called me to do, but they are not who I am,” she said. “At my core, I am first a daughter of God and a worshiper of the one true and living God.” That foundation governs everything, requiring intentional discipline to protect it. “Remaining centered in Christ requires intentional discipline; therefore, I am very protective of my private time with the Lord.” Because before anything public, there was formation. “Before there were platforms, there was sanctification. There was holiness, prayer, fasting, and more prayer and fasting.”
Obedience has required deep and costly surrender. “Obedience has required me to surrender things that once felt essential: family proximity, personal comfort, the approval of others…” she said. One of her most difficult decisions reshaped her path entirely. “One of the most difficult acts of obedience the Lord required of me was leaving my uncle’s church…” Yet what felt like loss became divine positioning. “What felt like loss in the natural became a launching pad in the Spirit.” Looking back, she understands the purpose. “Obedience refines the heart, purifies motives, stretches faith, and creates space for God to entrust us with more of His purposes.”
Her life flows from private filling, not public demand. “I have learned that I cannot pour out publicly if I am not being filled and refilled privately,” she said. Time with God is not optional—it is sustaining. “When I spend time with the Lord, He reminds me that I never need to carry burdens… because it all belongs at His feet.” In this season, her posture is clear and consistent. “Surrender for me looks like continual yielding,” she said.
That surrender shapes how she discerns her path. “Ambition often pushes and strives, while divine assignment carries a grace and confirmation that comes from the Lord,” Sophia McBride said. Even in hidden seasons, God remained faithful. “In those seasons of hiddenness, it was daily immersion in worship that sustained me,” she said. Through discipline, her heart remains aligned. “Prayer and fasting not only reveal clarity, but they also reveal hidden motives…”
Everything she produces flows from connection, not pressure. “I try to guard my heart from the pressure to produce,” she said. Her posture remains rooted in obedience rather than urgency. “In most instances, I wait for instructions to be downloaded from heaven.” She understands the source of every gift she carries. “Every book, every song, even recipes and designs, is literally straight from heaven.”
That flow is evident in the work she is releasing in this season, including her new single, “Because He Lives,” and her children’s book series, Kingdom Kids, both of which reflect her commitment to creating from a place of intimacy with God rather than striving.
Her approach remains simple and anchored. “I often remind myself that fruit grows naturally when the branch remains connected to the vine,” she said. “I desire that everything I create flows from time spent with God rather than from striving.”
