Kashandra Murphy: A Beacon of Resilience and Dedication in Education

In the heart of the southern United States, nestled in the border town of Texarkana, Arkansas, a powerful voice rises from the educational landscape. Kashandra Murphy, a dedicated educator of 17 years, speaks with an enthusiasm and passion that is palpable. Her journey, marked by resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to the students she serves, is inspiring.

“I was born and raised in Texarkana,” she begins, her voice echoing with pride. “From Pre-Kindergarten to fifth-grade Literacy, I have been in classrooms, shaping young minds and hearts. Serving as a Teacher Mentor to novice teachers at Kilpatrick Elementary School has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.”

Kashandra’s personal narrative is a testament to the power of education. Raised in a single-parent household in public housing, she recalls a home filled with books, newspapers, and magazines. Her mother, a nursing student, instilled in her children the belief that their situation was temporary and that through education, they could transcend their circumstances.

“My mother made education a priority,” she shares, her voice softening in nostalgic reminiscence. “I watched her study night and day, often through tears, reminding my brother and me that our situation would soon get better.”

Kashandra’s passion for education was ignited by her early experiences. She recalls the profound influence of her grandmother and mother, her first teachers, who instilled in her the importance of service and accountability.

“I thought I wanted to be a nurse like my mom,” she muses, “but that changed quickly when I realized my passion was in education. I wanted to serve and impact students’ lives just as my first teachers did for me.”

In the classroom, Kashandra’s teaching philosophy centers on creating an inclusive culture free from barriers that could hinder academic progress. A safe haven where students can take risks, make mistakes, and feel empowered.

Yet, her journey has not been without challenges. As a Black woman educator, Kashandra has grappled with feelings of devaluation and unjust scrutiny. She shares, “My assertiveness has often been misinterpreted as hostility or rage.” Despite these obstacles, she has achieved remarkable success, including being recognized as Campus Teacher of the Year in 2020 and 2023, District Teacher of the Year in 2023, and a 2024 Regional Finalist for Arkansas State Teacher of the Year.

When asked how she believes her work as a Black woman educator can have a lasting impact, Kashandra says that her work will inspire her colleagues and Black students to tap into their gifts and potential. She believes that her confident and assertive presence can change situations and that her example can encourage others to embrace their cultural identity and stand out as deserving leaders in the education realm.

Kashandra advises other educators to walk with purpose, speak boldly, and never let anyone dim their light. She emphasizes “YOU ARE!” and explains that you can finish that sentence with whatever you desire. “Never allow anyone to become an author, writing your story,” she says. “Seize every opportunity to pour into yourself by using your voice because you belong here, are much needed, and are not alone on this educational journey. Embrace your cultural identity by standing out, encouraging other black women to follow suit.”

She believes educators should seize every opportunity to pour into themselves and use their voices to empower themselves and others.

As a contributor to the Centering Our Voices anthology, a book filled with Black women educators’ experiences, Kashandra continues her mission to inspire and uplift. Her chapter, a poignant account of overcoming adversity, serves as a beacon of resilience and determination.

“This book will break down systemic and traditional barriers,” she asserts. “It will awaken us all to the realities faced by Black educators.”

Through her words, her actions, and her unwavering commitment to her students, Kashandra Murphy’s impact extends far beyond the classroom walls. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance, the importance of education, and the profound influence of a dedicated teacher.
