From Struggle to Strength: How God Restored My Identity and Purpose
In the midst of struggle, it’s easy to lose sight of hope. As I sit in stillness, reflecting on my journey as an independent mother, I am reminded of the power of transformation and how it has changed my life in ways I never imagined. My path has not been easy, but it has been mine.
I struggled to find my identity. I felt lost and uncertain about my future. I knew God, but our relationship was superficial. I relied on men to provide for me, using sex as a way to express love. The consequences were devastating. I became a mother at seventeen, and that forced me to navigate life’s challenges head-on. But in the midst of uncertainty, I found my faith.
As an independent mother, I had to rely on God to guide me through uncomfortable territories. I began to study His Word and started to see myself in a new light. I realized I was not alone—that I had a power greater than myself guiding me. With that knowledge, I began to break free from the shackles that had held me back for so long. It was in those moments of vulnerability that I discovered my true calling.
God uses us in different ways at different times in our lives. For me, motherhood was the catalyst for growth, transformation, and purpose. Even when I felt unprepared, God equipped me with the strength and resilience to care for my child.
Through this journey, I learned to listen to God’s voice and discern His plan for my life. I came to understand that my role as a mother isn’t just about nurturing my child, but also about allowing God to shape me into the woman He’s called me to be. I began to prioritize my needs—caring for myself physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I set boundaries, learned to say no, and surrounded myself with people who uplifted me.
As I did, I began to see transformation within me. I was no longer the same woman I had been a few years earlier. I was stronger, wiser, and more confident. I discovered a sense of purpose and meaning, and I found a voice I never knew I had. When I looked in the mirror, I saw a woman finally at peace with herself.
The Bible tells us, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). These words are more than a promise—they are a reality that can change the course of our lives.
The Power of Transformation
God had a special calling on my life, and I finally answered. In 2020, I embarked on a transformative journey, studying God’s Word deeply. I broke free from toxic relationships and habits, quieting the noise to hear His voice. Through my seven-day spiritual journey, God showed me the way out of struggle—into motherhood, true love, and my purpose. I published my first book, graduated from college, and became a better mother to my two sons. My walk with Christ continues, and I now embark on 21-day spiritual journeys with Him.
In the midst of struggle, it’s easy to lose hope. But the truth is, our struggles are not in vain. The darkness we face can give way to radiant light, illuminating the path God has set before us.
For four years, I’ve walked a path of celibacy—abstaining from fornication and discovering a deeper sense of peace and self-worth. Before, heartbreak after heartbreak left me losing my sense of identity. But God used this journey to free me from the pattern of using intimacy as a way to validate my worth. Instead, I found value and identity in Him.
As I committed to His Word, I learned that abstaining from fornication is not just an act of obedience but a demonstration of devotion. This path has not been without challenges, but it has taught me self-control, self-respect, and self-love.
I’ve also learned that true love and connection aren’t measured by physical intimacy, but by the depth of our emotional and spiritual bonds. By prioritizing my relationship with God and aligning my actions with His will, I’ve found purpose and direction that guide me in all things.
The Bible reminds us, “God works all things together for good” (Romans 8:28). Our challenges are not obstacles but opportunities for growth and transformation.
When we walk through the fire, we may be refined, but we are not consumed. Instead, we emerge stronger, wiser, and more resilient. Our experiences, though painful, equip us with understanding and empathy to uplift and inspire others.
The journey of faith is not one of perfection, but of progress. It’s trusting God’s plan, even when the path is unclear. It’s holding fast to hope, even when the darkness feels overwhelming. Matthew 22:37–39 reminds me to love God with all my heart, soul, and mind, and to love my neighbor as myself. This journey has taught me that true strength comes from embracing my weaknesses and trusting God’s plan.
Imagine being lost in a desert with no direction in sight. The sun beats down relentlessly, draining your strength and will to keep going. But then, on the horizon, you see an oasis—a haven of rest, refreshment, and rejuvenation. That was me. I had no sense of direction, and I had buried my dreams, seeking validation from people who couldn’t see my worth.
But God’s Word is our oasis in the desert—a refuge from life’s storms. When we’re struggling to find our way, His Word lifts us up, gives us direction, and sets us on the path of transformation. The Bible says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17). This is the promise of transformation: that we can be made new, that our struggles can become strengths, and that our darkness can be turned into light.
So, don’t give up on your dreams. Don’t lose faith in the midst of struggle. As I look back on the journey that brought me here, I am reminded that my struggles were not in vain. My story is not one of perfection, but of progress—and I hope it inspires others to hold fast to faith and never give up.
