After Facing Great Adversity, This Faith-Led Advocate Inspires Others to Seek God and Find Healing Through Their Testimony
Tamisa Hunter is the epitome of the cliche, You don’t look like what you’ve been through. When you look at her, you see a bold, confident, and unapologetic woman who understands the assignment God has given her. She is a faith-led advocate, author, entrepreneur, speaker, coach, TV host, and mentor who has faced many adversities. Homelessness, domestic abuse, rejection, identity crises, depression, suicidal thoughts, sexual abuse, and facing death on several occasions are just the tip of the iceberg. Tamisa’s journey has led her to serve women all over, helping women find healing through their testimony and seek after God while discovering their purpose.
One of the ways Tamisa serves women is through her organization, Women of Truth. She advocates the Word of God to women inspiring, motivating, and empowering them to become their best selves enabling them to pursue a purposeful life despite their despairing situations, resource limitations, and personal shortcomings. “My heart goes out to these women because I was once them,” Tamisa says via phone. Tamisa knows what it feels like to be a domestic abuse victim. She knows what it feels like to do things she is not proud of to survive. Feeling unworthy to be used by God, ashamed and embarrassed, were what kept Tamisa running from God for a long time.
“I did not want people to judge me for my past,” Tamisa says as she begins to reflect on some of the things that made her feel unworthy and ashamed. During a five-year relationship Tamisa was involved in, she became a domestic violence victim, homeless, and tried several suicide attempts. “He was a drug dealer, which led me to be in the drug game as well. I sold drugs to survive.” Tamisa received black eyes and 32 stitches from being hit in the head with a two-by-four; a blow that the enemy wanted to use to stop Tamisa’s destiny. “I should’ve been dead a long time ago or in a jailhouse or doing fed time or something.” Tamisa goes on to share that she had experienced times when she was in the middle of drug busts where the cops would find cocaine and marijuana where she and her boyfriend were staying. “They would always let me go.” During that time, Tamisa questioned how she was in the middle of everything with her boyfriend yet never charged.
God had His hand on me every time. I’ve never done a day in jail for anything related to drugs.
Eventually, Tamisa was able to get out of her abusive relationship, and eight months later, she met the love of her life- her husband of over 24 years. Tamisa mentioned that the first few years of their relationship were rough. Despite her new love speaking positive things to her, she wasn’t receiving it because she didn’t know how to love herself or accept the love and support. But he continued loving her and speaking life. “My husband is my grace and I tell people that all the time,” she says. “I found love when I wasn’t looking.” Despite her shortcomings and past, the continued love and support of Tamisa’s husband helped her fully surrender her life to God. “I surrendered it all. I surrendered my kids, my past, my mom, and my dad, everything that had hurt me. I gave it all over to God. I asked God to have His way, and to fill me up with His spirit.” Surrendering to God was the beginning of Tamisa’s transformation process.
Tamisa began speaking life over herself daily, and that made a big impact. “I started speaking over myself, daily positive information and declaring things over my life.” Some of the things she spoke over herself were that she was bold, beautiful, successful, the head and not the tail, an ambassador for Christ, loved no matter what happened to her that day. “I also went through the Bible and found the promises of God, and I stood on those promises. When I felt myself dragging, getting back, consumed with the world, I would break off and get by myself and ask God to open up my ears so that I could hear Him.”
It’s so much more to Tamisa’s journey and transformation, and as she so clearly puts it, “a phone call or interview, even four or five books, couldn’t get it out because of how God kept me.” Perhaps it would take more than four or five books, as Tamisa stated. But at least, we can get a glimpse of her testimony in her new book, But, I’m Still Here, published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
In But, I’m Still Here, Tamisa recounts her harrowing experiences. She leaves no stones unturned as she helps readers overcome the adversities in their lives by sharing her story of overcoming domestic violence, depression, suicidal thoughts, near-death experiences, sexual abuse, adultery, and homelessness. “I lay it all out in this book, I want people when they read it to understand that we all have skeletons in our closet, we all have a past, we all have a testimony and we all have a purpose.” Not only does the book provides a glimpse of what Tamisa went through, it also includes the steps she took to overcome to become the woman she is today. “Overcoming adversity, loving myself, finding my identity and walking boldly, confidently and unapologetically led me into my purpose and to the woman God has created me to be.”
Tamisa wants women to understand that there is purpose in their surrender as they fully release to God and walk by faith and not by sight. Women not being led by the world or other people’s opinions, then they too will find their purpose. “We need women to own and walk in their purpose so they can help someone else. Currently, Tamisa is working on a masterclass scheduled to release in January where she will help eight women walk out their purpose and the process of surrendering and teaching them how to prioritize self-care and love themselves. Tamisa’s vision is to help women find healing through their testimony and seek after God while discovering their purpose through continuous growth.
Speaking of continuous growth, beginning in 2022, Tamisa’s show Table Talk with Tamisa, where women come together for transparent, authentic, and empowering conversations, is scheduled to stream on all streaming platforms. “I’m excited,” Tamisa says. “My hope for Table Talk with Tamisa is for women to come to the show to share their story and start the process of healing, and during that healing, someone can see their story and say, “If she’s up there telling her story, then I can do the same thing, and I can be healed.”
For those who have heard, seen, or even read Tamisa’s story. It is evident that God has preserved and raised her up for His glory. Tamisa tells me that she doesn’t regret anything that she has gone through. “I thank God for everything that I went through because I’m able to stand tall. I’m able to come boldly and tell you that I’m here. I’m thankful that He chose little old me.” As a little girl from Paris, Texas, Tamisa never thought she would be the woman she is today. “Don’t stop hoping and praying and never give up because if I gave up, regardless of whether it was through suicide or whatever, then my legacy and destiny would have died that moment.” She continues, “I know now that it’s harvest time, and my harvest time is to help other women any way I possibly can. I don’t know everything, but what I do know is what I have been through. I can pass my blueprint over to that sister to help her get up out that gutter.”
Tamisa is a testament that faith is the key to survival and abundant living. www.tamisahunter.com
