Todayspurposewoman.com continues to chat with Carter about her entrepreneurship journey and her upcoming wealth development summit, Taxes in Tulum.
After graduating college, you started Carter Capital, PLLC. Tell us a little more about this journey.
I believe entrepreneurship has always been in me; I had to evolve from hustling to a business owner. After college, being a single mom and 1st generation graduate, I felt I was equipped with the experience and knowledge to do anything. I never thought I’d be a full-time entrepreneur. Honestly, I thought I would work a 9-5 and then part-time in my business ventures like my dad did because I watched him succeed that way.
My dad’s path was not my path. In 2018, I was fired from my 9-5 despite my performance and forced into full-time entrepreneurship. I decided I’ll never let a company dictate my income or freedom. Carter Capital started in 2013 with six clients; no employees, and no brick and mortar, but we had a plan. We now have over 25 employees, virtual and physical locations worldwide nine years later.
What is the biggest challenge you faced in your business?
The biggest challenge I’ve faced was learning how to work on my business instead of in my business. I thought that being the boss meant I had to touch everything and be materially invested in my business. My mindset shift helped me become a stronger business owner; I have learned to delegate, automate and enjoy the fruits of my labor.
What are you most proud of regarding your business?
I’m most proud to say I understand all aspects of my businesses, and I’ve built several 6-7 figure companies over the years.
