Dr. Affton Coleman: A Journey of Resilience, Dedication, and Innovation in Education

In the world of education, Dr. Affton Coleman is a name synonymous with resilience, dedication, and innovation. As an educator with 17 years of experience, Affton has mastered inspiring young minds as the Assistant Principal at Southside Elementary. A staunch advocate for progressive education, she is a proud mother of four and a second mother to countless students whose lives she has touched.

Born and raised in E. St. Louis, IL, Dr. Affton’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of education. “I was moulded by the resilience, determination, and hard work of my mother and grandmother,” Affton shares, reflecting on her upbringing in a single-family home.

Despite the challenges of her early life, she fondly recalls a childhood imbued with love, support, and a strong sense of community. The resilience of her family and neighbors shaped Dr. Affton’s worldview, teaching her the importance of perseverance, self-reliance, and the power of community.

Dr. Affton’s passion for teaching was born from her personal experiences and the influential figures in her life. “I experienced the transformative power of education firsthand,” she states. “It broke cycles of poverty and created opportunities for personal and community advancement.” Inspired by the teachers who served as beacons of hope and catalysts for change, Dr. Affton embarked on her journey to become an educator.

Dr. Affton’s philosophy of teaching is rooted in empowerment and personal growth. She firmly believes that education extends beyond academic knowledge, nurturing students to become critical thinkers, compassionate individuals, and lifelong learners. “Every student is unique, with their own strengths, challenges, and potential for growth,” she explains. Her commitment to fostering positive relationships built on trust, respect, and open communication resonates in her role as a mentor, guide, and advocate for her students.

As a black woman in the field of education, Dr. Affton has navigated her fair share of obstacles, including systemic racism, bias, and stereotypes. “I’ve faced numerous challenges,” she admits. However, Affton has not let these hurdles deter her. Instead, she has used them as stepping stones, cultivating resilience, advocating for equity, and continuously learning and growing.

Her role as an assistant principal has given her a platform to profoundly impact students, colleagues, and the broader educational community. “My appointment reflects not just my achievements, but the importance of representation and diversity in educational leadership,” she asserts.

Dr. Affton advises educators to stay true to their passion and purpose. “Trust the process,” she counsels. “Be open and willing to learn. Never assume you’re the smartest person in the room because every person has something valuable to share.” It’s this humility and openness to learn that has helped Dr. Affton make a positive impact within the educational field.

Dr. Affton is also a contributor to the Centering Our Voices anthology, a collection of stories from Black women educators across the nation. Her decision to share her story was inspired by a desire to connect with like-minded individuals and grow as a leader. “Sharing my story is an opportunity to gain other perspectives on various professional situations,” she reveals.

Her upcoming book emphasizes the power of small changes in making significant differences. “We, as a community, decide the outcomes. It’s our choice to do great things for the students we serve,” she declares. In her chapter, Dr. Affton explores the idea of being intentional and purposeful in her work, even if it means standing alone.
