Dear Christian Woman: God Can Use Prayer and Therapy to Heal You

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and for the purpose-driven woman of faith, this conversation is both necessary and sacred. Because yes, we believe in prayer, fasting, and miracles. But we also need to talk about therapy, mental health, and wholeness without shame or fear.

You can be Spirit-filled and still struggle emotionally. You can love Jesus and still need help. You can trust God and still go to therapy.

Prayer and Therapy Can Coexist

Let’s be clear: prayer is powerful. But so is wise counsel. The same God who tells us to cast our cares also instructs us to seek wisdom, get understanding, and walk in truth.

You can cast your cares on the Lord and talk to a therapist.
You can rebuke the enemy and rest your nervous system.
You can fast and pray and unpack trauma in a safe, Spirit-led environment.

This isn’t a lack of faith—it’s spiritual maturity. It’s stewardship of the body, mind, and spirit God gave you.

The Enemy Wants You to Suffer in Silence

One of the enemy’s greatest tactics is isolation. He wants you to think you’re the only one struggling. He wants you to suffer quietly because you’re “too anointed to be anxious.” And sadly, sometimes people—family, church, even leadership—reinforce this idea that getting help means you’re not strong enough spiritually.

But sis, the devil is a liar.

Yes, there are things we battle that are spiritual warfare. Some torment is demonic. Some anxiety, fear, and confusion are absolutely the result of the enemy trying to cloud your mind and shut down your purpose. But not everything is a demon—and not everything is “just emotional.” Sometimes it’s both. And we need discernment to know how to approach both in wisdom and power.

Healing Doesn’t Look the Same for Everyone

Some will say, “God took my depression away in one moment.” Others will say, “God brought me through the fire with therapy, journaling, rest, boundaries, and hard conversations.”

Neither one is more spiritual.

Healing is holy—no matter the method. Don’t discount your process because it doesn’t look like someone else’s. While you’re believing God to remove the heaviness, pay attention to how He might be bringing the healing. That phone number. That counselor. That sabbatical. That conversation.

God heals in layers—and He heals in love.

You Are Not Weak—You Are Wise

You are not broken because you cry. You are not weak because you feel. You are not less spiritual because you need support.

You are wise for seeking help. You are bold for facing your pain. You are brave for saying, “God, I trust You—however You choose to heal me.”

Scriptures to Anchor Your Healing Journey

  • “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.” — 3 John 1:2 NKJV
  • “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you.” — Isaiah 26:3 NLT
  • “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 NIV

This Month, Make Room for You

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we invite you to intentionally pursue your healing:

  • Seek God in prayer—and seek out a therapist or support group.
  • Journal what you’re feeling—without shame or filters.
  • Take breaks and nourish your body—rest is a form of worship.
  • Ask God to show you: What does healing look like for me in this season?

Reflection

Take 10 minutes this week to sit with this question in prayer or journaling:
“Lord, what steps do You want me to take for my healing? Show me the ways You’re already answering my prayers—even if it doesn’t look how I expected.”

Your Testimony Could Help Another Woman Heal

We believe stories break chains. If you’ve experienced God’s healing—whether through prayer, therapy, deliverance, or process—we’d love to hear from you. Your testimony may be featured in a future issue or post.
